Pots de creme

I found this off www.wildoats.com It's a really good vegan dessert that doesn't taste like soy or tofu. I didn't make the topping because I don't really care for nuts. This is probably my favourite vegan dessert excluding anything from Millenium. I used Scharffen Berger Chocolate and I think it really made a difference. I also used light coconut milk from Trader Joe's but I imagine it would be even better with regular coconut milk. Yum!

Chocolate Coconut Pots De Crème

1 (14 oz.) can Wild Oats Organic Coconut Milk
1/3 c. sugar
3 Tbsp. good quality bittersweet cocoa powder
3 oz. good quality semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tsp. cornstarch
2 Tbsp. cold water
2 Tbsp. slivered almonds, toasted
2 Tbsp. shredded coconut, toasted

Heat coconut milk over medium heat. Stir in sugar, cocoa powder and chopped chocolate. Cook until chocolate melts, about 3 minutes. Add vanilla. Mix together cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Slowly drizzle cornstarch into coconut milk, stirring constantly. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes longer, until mixture thickens. Divide between four (6-ounce) ramekins. Chill for at least 2 hours before serving. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add almonds, toast until golden. Remove from pan and add coconut. Toast until golden. Allow to cool. Top pots de crème with toasted almonds and coconut.

Fun in the snow!

We took Gimli up to Donner park for the day to have fun in the snow. It's his favourite activity, even better than chasing the tennis ball!

Spoon drawing updated

I spent four additional hours drawing the spoon. I blocked in a bit of the handle and refined some of the tip. The highlights and lowlights haven't yet been refined fully. This paper keeps feathering when I erase and there is a permanent smudge on the left side of the spoon. :( boo hoo. Spoons are much harder to draw than I expected.

Spoon

I haven't drawn in over a year (sketches below don't count) so I thought I'd get back into practice by drawing something simple. Spoons are definately not as easy as they look although it's a lot easier than drawing a person. The color is off on this because the lighting is poor in here. I'll resume my drawing tommorow when I actually can see. The drawing is done on Arches 140lb water color paper. I've not had to much experience with this paper before so that in itself is an experiment. The drawing surface seems to fleck off a lot and it doesn't seem to be able to take too much blending. I have ruined the paper in a few areas already. No part of the drawing is done. I still have to go back and refine a few dozen more times. Drawing size is about 7x11" I would say. I just randomly cut a piece of paper. I've spent about 3 hours on the drawing so far.
